Modern Slavery

Modern slavery

At ALG and Ikon, we are committed to fostering a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment where every student is treated with dignity and respect. We believe everyone has the right to live, study and work free from exploitation. Raising awareness of modern slavery is an important part of helping our community recognise the signs, understand their rights, and know where to seek support.

Modern slavery can include:

  • Forced labour
  • Human trafficking
  • Debt bondage
  • Forced marriage
  • Servitude
  • Deceptive recruitment

Modern slavery can occur in any country, including Australia, and can affect people from all backgrounds.

Recognising the signs

A person may be experiencing exploitation if they:

  • Are being pressured to work in unsafe or unfair conditions
  • Are not paid what they were promised
  • Have their passport or identity documents taken from them
  • Are threatened or intimidated
  • Are forced to repay excessive debts or recruitment fees
  • Feel unable to leave their job, accommodation or personal situation.

Getting support

If you are concerned about your own situation, or about someone you know, support is available.

Sonder – 24/7 wellbeing support

All Ikon and ALG students have free access to Sonder, a confidential wellbeing and safety service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Sonder can provide:

  • Immediate wellbeing and safety support
  • Practical guidance if you are concerned about exploitation or feel unsafe
  • Help connecting you with appropriate services
  • Support if you are worried about a friend or fellow student.

You can access Sonder at any time through the Sonder app or by calling the 24/7 Support Centre on 1800 234 560.
